It all started as an idea, much like any idea that sounds good. But the climate wasn't right, and ICANN kept fiddling around, not sure of it's place in the grand scheme of things, but the idea didn't fizzle - it grew.

Now New York City and even former Mayor Ed Koch has jumped on the bandwagon with a new video promo for the .NYC TLD...

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has offered his support for the effort to enter the TLD .NYC into the legacy root system.

In a video released last week he touts the jobs and revenue for the city that such a TLD will create for the Big Apple and even says he wants to register a couple of SLDs under the ICANN hopeful.

We've got the video right here for you to view, it's pretty entertaining, although Mayor Koch always was noted for his permasmile and sense of humor.

Although it appears that there are still several hurdles that need to be crossed, the .NYC folks are very hopefull that sometime in Q2 of 2010 their TLD will be live.

The city itself is backing the project, with city Councilman Gale Brewer spearheading the effort for ICANN to accept the TLD on behalf of the City of New York, while Council Speaker Christine Quinn says, "We expect to generate millions of dollars a year through the sale of web addresses ending in .NYC."

Los Angeles is getting its own TLD too, although there isn't any obstacle course for ICANN to set up, or any hoops for Los Angeles to jump through, since it is a private initiative similar to the case with the ccTLD for Tuvalu (.TV).

The .LA ccTLD is up for grabs and it looks like Los Angeles is going to be the target audience. New Orleans and Alexandria are just going to have to wait until .NO and .AL are delegated to them by those respective TLD Holders, instead of branding .LA as the TLD for Louisiana.

Oh, wait. That would mean that Norway and Albania would have to transfer the authority of their ccTLDs to those cities in Louisina wouldn't it? And besides, we think Alabama wants Albania's ccTLD anyway, and since they're an actual state, wouldn't they trump what Alexandria Lousiana wants anyway?

What a mess!
